The Russian Arts Theater & Studio Presents AVENUE OF WONDER

The work of Nikolai Gogol, the strangest genius Russia has ever produced, comes to life in The Russian Arts Theater and Studio's production of Avenue of Wonder. Internationally renowned Russian director Aleksey Burago directs this dark comedy featuring an ensemble of six actors. Based on the short story Nevsky Prospekt, this production will also re-inaugurate the historical Balcony Theater at West Park Presbyterian Church.

One evening, while strolling along Nevsky Prospekt, the central avenue that remains to this day the main artery of St. Petersburg, a distraught artist and a brazen lieutenant encounter a mysterious prostitute and a young housewife. In their separate pursuits of the women through the labyrinths of side streets, courtyards and winding staircases, both men come to realize all is not what it seems on the glittery avenue. As the rational plane of life slant beneath their feet, these comic and self-deluding characters soon discover that between everything ordinary there is a crack and deep in the shadows, peering up, are the maddening fantasies of the human soul. This February, join the cast of The Russian Arts Theater & Studio at the historic Balcony Theater and experience the strange genius of Nikolai Gogol.

Adapted and Directed by: Aleksey Burago

Featuring: Charles Anderson, Hazen Cuyler, Luisa Menzen, Ariel Polanco, Christopher Zach and Di Zhu.

                              ABOUT NIKOLAI GOGOL

"We all come out of Gogol's Overcoat." --F. Dostoevsky

Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol was born in the Mirgorod district of the Ukraine in 1809. A talented actor, obsessive liar, mediocre student and a failed professor, Gogol would one day become one of the strangest literary geniuses Russia ever produced. His fantastic and comic characters had profound influence on writers such as Dostoevsky and Nabokov. Among his most famous writings include The Overcoat, The Nose, Diary of a Madman, The Inspector General, and Dead Souls. While his works are fairly well known in America, they are often poorly translated and misunderstood. Some critics have been quick to label Gogol as the "Russian Dickens", but this is yet another mishap. His stories are far more biting and salty, with a command of the irrational unmatched by any writer before and since. In 1852, Gogol died at the age of 42. He was misunderstood by his contemporaries, mishandled by theatre directors and ended his life mistreated by doctors - with medicinal leeches hanging from his exceptional nose. This winter, join The Russian Arts Theater & Studio as we pay homage to 'one of the oddest Russians in Russia.'
